Education
University of Michigan - BS, Chemistry , Cornell University - MS, ChemistryExperience
My teaching experience includes working as a teaching assistant in introductory chemistry, analytical chemistry, and physical chemistry while at Cornell for a master's degree in chemistry. I was a volunteer tutor for chemistry and chemical engineering at RPI while I was pursuing my Ph.D. I also taught technical writing, statistics, and experiment design to coworkers while I worked in industry. I am now an independent, professional tutor. I teach math, chemistry, physics, and statistics. My teaching philosophy is that most people learn best through practice. This practice needs to be the right kind in order to be successful. Students can become discouraged with an intimidating subject if they do not know where to start. My approach is to provide enough scaffolding that students feel it is safe to explore a subject, while remaining ready to try another approach if the first does not work. Additionally, I try to teach my students the process of solving problems. In this way, students are able to use the process on their own as their confidence increases. As a tutor, I work with adults and teens to overcome their fears, particularly a fear of math. This allows students to learn effectively and to solve problems with confidence. I find it satisfying to teach math and to help students realize that they can do math. I like knowing that I can help my students learn to use math.In addition to teaching, I also enjoy reading and baking.Hobbies
